The Shadow

There is something comforting about widespread agreement; if I make a remark I view as risky during a lecture, I breathe a sigh of relief if I see nodding heads and hear an “amen” or two. We humans are a gregarious species; we survived on the planet mostly because of our marked ability for cooperation. Deep in my cells — and yours — is an instinct that connects our well-being with membership in the tribe.

Aquarian genius involves overcoming that instinct. To innovate truly, one must break existing rules and accept censure and possible banishment. All geniuses are misunderstood; that’s built into the definition of the word. To succeed, one must develop a thick skin regarding our basic need for approval. To hold a truth with which everyone else agrees is easy; to hold one against the tide of popular assumptions is vastly more arduous. How does the psyche adapt? There are healthy answers, or all geniuses would be mad as well as misunderstood, and they are not. But there is also an easy, unhealthy answer: to freeze the heart. To become cold, indifferent, and emotionally dissociated. Simply to give up caring about people, and about one’s own humanity. In the Aquarian Shadow, we observe the icy killer — not the impassioned, violent rioter, but something more akin to the efficiently paid assassin.

Perhaps all rules should be questioned. Certainly some rules should be broken. But there are a few eternal principles we break only at our peril: “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is one of them, I think. If we have empathy, if we have a sense of our humanity, following that principle reasonably well comes naturally. But if Pluto-in-Aquarius goes down into its Shadow, it ceases to feel warmth and connectedness, and becomes as dangerous and indifferent as a forgotten land mine left over from a war your grandfather fought.
